The objective of the Coastal Lagoons project was to assess the situation of the coastal lagoons of Rio Grande do Sul in terms of water characteristics, biodiversity and the various environmental services provided by these ecosystems. Tourism was addressed in terms of negative impacts to these environments, but also as an important tool for the conservation of these ecosystems considered unique for their diversity along the coastal region. Scientific tourism can contribute to the conservation of the lagoons and their rich biodiversity of fauna and flora. The project, initiated in 2005, is now in the process of initiating its fourth edition involving other lagoons in Rio Grande do Sul.
